View Full Version : Particle System Misc.

Here's a video of the new water splash effects. Both clientside weapons and serverside bullets (That includes bullets fired from func_tanks, sentry guns, grunts, helicopters, etc.) will make visual effects when they impact with water.

http://svencoop.com/davemcd/watersplash_serversidebullets.avi

The bonus of this however, is that I have moved the serverside based bullets mostly clientside. The Impact Sound, Tracer Effect, and Impact Effects are now handled by the client, and that should save some bandwidth and reduce lag.

Things like shell casings hitting the water, gibs, debris, players moving through water, etc. will also cause water splash effects.

-------------------------------------------

Second note: In the video the muzzle sprite on the mp5 is handled by the particle system. In 3.5, models can have their own custom muzzle sprite with a specific size and attachment point. No longer is the game limited to 4.

Maan...Sven 3.5 sounds awesome with all these updates. It looks really cool. And it's also even cooler that it uses less lag thanks to more client side processing. You're awesome, Sniper. It seems to me that you've really REALLY helped the mod. Congrats on your awesomeness ;). I cannot wait to fight a gargantua with that new AI...ugh.

Beautiful effects, Sniper. However, what if there's stuff that isn't supposed to splash? For example, lava/magma.

sweet splashes :) 3.5 will 0wn

Only water currently splashes... You can set the func_water entity to CONTENTS_LAVA or CONTENTS_SLIME in it's options field, and it will not generate splashes when hit.

"SvenCoop V Released (Due to huge changelog, we skipped 3.5 and 4)"

The new MP5 looks good, a bit to dark though. The arm looks great. And the new effects are a nice addition too.

what if the water is a darker tone? do the splashes still match the water color?
looks great too.

Sniper, you oughta put up as many ideas and goodies for this upcoming version - then get it released as Sven Co-op v4.0 (Final Version for Half-Life). Then you can get a kick at Sven Co-op2 even harder.

What blows me away is that this is *still* based on HL1... I can hardly imagine what SC2 is going to be like!

Again, very nice. It's kind of funny to look at all the particles bouncing around. I really look forward to seeing it in SC 3.5. By the way, in the first video, I noticed a 2nd weapon in the weapon 6 category which I assume is the SAW. That's not all, though. I also noticed a 4th weapon in the weapon 3 category that so far has the same sprite as the MP5 but different ammo. Could this be another new gun?

The debris from the walls and stuff bounce WAY too much to look realistic or anything. :-\

Well that's because they're not actually wall debris. It was just a test. I'm surprised you thought that's what the final product looks like. Heh. Heh.

is this done in a similar way to spirit of half life's particle engine, as this is far superior to it, and to NS's particle engine :D it looks soo cool :D and yet its in svencoop :D

by any chance is this all client side? :D

Sniper
19-04-2005, 11:21 AM
Yeah it's all clientside.

is there limit to the amount of particles that can be shown on screen a once?

Sniper
19-04-2005, 01:11 PM
Not really. Right now, it starts to get laggy when about 9,000 collision particles are being drawn.

The_6th_Monkey
19-04-2005, 01:23 PM
do they bounce off players?

Sniper
19-04-2005, 08:14 PM
For what the particle system is going to be used for, most of the effects wont collide with players. But if need be, that's possible.

Petokala

This looks really good! I can't wait to have this! :D

Dred_furst
20-04-2005, 10:19 AM
...and i guess this is through an entity? also something i saw it spirit of half life in thier particle system is that the particles can have different states, like when they hit water orc certain triggers :D

i remember making something rather cool with that, like the particles fly out of a couple of chutes into a reactor core, where they loose thier gravity and float past with a different sprite :D

but that is just awesome at the moment :D

cscarlet
21-04-2005, 01:06 PM
From 9000 particles I can safely say it doesn't appear to be an entity as 9000 would kill the engine completly

Could you make it so the particles (have an option to) hurt players??

g1l
28-04-2005, 05:26 PM
Another thing, give the entity some flags like sin and cos functions. One of the problems with the NS particle system was you couldn't give the particles circular or spiral motion.

Geogriffith
28-04-2005, 06:49 PM
Building on what g1l said:
Is it possible to affect the size of the particles mid-stream? It would be great to make some bullet-time cutscenes, where the particles come out of the back of a bullet, and grow to various sizes, following a smooth sine curve.

Of course, what I'm asking for is variable spawn size along a straight line, but what he asked for is more complex paths. But while we're dreaming... Please, nice Mr. Sniper guy?

Mad Gonesy
29-04-2005, 04:32 AM
Nice picture! Looks like a cool effect.

Jesus christ guys, stop asking for unrealistic expectations. Sine Curves?! This is the HL engine we're talking about, its already a major improvement (and all client-side) without it actually being a proper physics model. All this has been done without the engine code too.

Dred_furst
29-04-2005, 11:02 AM
hehe, i think Jonsey is right, although scaling sprites is just terribly simple, if you want spiraling sprites, i feel this can be done with wind variables, but im not sure...

You know what all this water particle shiz means, right? We're going to have a flood of D-day beach landing style maps being made. Oh well, could be interesting. Still, the effects are pro as always with sniper. Keep it up mate.

Shiroi Len

Good work overall though.

Edit: Oh, and will the water splash upwards if an explosion occurs underwater? Like say, you shoot a tripmine that's far underwater. Will there be a splash at the surface?

3.5 will be great, keep up the good work, but we haven't been getting up to date on svencoop2,
with sniper as coder imaginge svencoop2, ive been checking every 2 days for new news on it its gonna be awesome, because when i played on tims coop, im wondering how they would survive with most of the people that are going to switch to SC2. They don't even havee the blood animations and ripping sounds yet x.x;

and shiroi len, i dont think it will do that but in hl2 it will automaticly from the main coding i think

HL2 RULEZ
02-08-2005, 08:08 AM
and i forgot to mention something.. please dont bann me or get mad for asking but did you somehow take a few hl2 code or ideas because hl2 already has all of this in its coding. X.x there i said it x.x

svencoop 3.5 is going to be a total pwnage

is it possible to include the hl2 water ? this would be awesome , in dodo's crazy coop they are going to do it and the screenies are awesome , trough now they are moving their mod into a stand alone o.O

Geogriffith
03-08-2005, 04:13 PM
No sense in adding HL2 code. That'd make it illegal to make the mod available to people who have not purchased HL2. Not to mention it'd send the system requirements skyrocketing.

HL2 RULEZ
04-08-2005, 11:43 AM
no it wouldn't be wise to put any hl2 things in sc3.5..people who are too lazy to buy hl2 can get it's graphics, ai, etc, then thats just stupid, why buy it then... anyways sc2s either way gonna be 69% better

I would be more concerned about the lag, since not even Half-Life2 Deathmatch has a good support for internet play.

WOW

Sniper, you've made a lot of progress despite the fact that you're the only dev left working on SC1.

One question though; will those of us that donated get the donator features or will those be added in a later release? (i dontated Dec 31, 2004)

Keep up the amazing work!

My guess is SC 3.5 gold will not exceed the hl engine,it will lengthen it.
And do you have a voiceicon yet? This one is blue :).

3.5 will be great, keep up the good work, but we haven't been getting up to date on svencoop2,

and shiroi len, i dont think it will do that but in hl2 it will automaticly from the main coding i think

HL2 RULEZ.

For one, I have played Half-Life 2 and know that it does that automatically. I'm asking if they are going to add a similar effect in SVENCOOP 3.5.

Everyone knows how great Half-Life 2 is but it's kind of annoying having someone throwing in your face all the stuff in HL2 that everyone knows is there.

SvenCoop 3.5, even though unfinished, is one thing that shows the Half-Life engine in all it's stretchable greatness.

Oh, and by the way, SC2 and SC3.5 are being worked on at the same time so there are updates coming up for both.
