    Post 3.5 Bronze Feature: Crate Attacking

    Here's a new video showing off the AI's ability to shoot crates.

    A lot of work has been done recently to calculate where an NPC should shoot at a breakable object. Arbitrarily shapped objects that level designers may create are no problem for the system.

    The red dots in the following image display the dynamically created target positions:

    Having monsters be able to attack breakable objects will mean level designers can have new gameplay options. For instance, imagine hordes of zombies trying to break down walls to get to the players. Or players may have to defend an important object from enemy attacks. There's plenty of areas to expand on with this feature.

    Breakable objects can have their own classification; they can be allied to specific factions in the game. A breakable object defined as "Alien Military" will be attacked by Human Grunts, and so on.

    Very cool, but I have a question regarding the AI:

    If a bunch of infinitely spawning zombies are set to attack a object, like a barrel, will they completely ignore the player, and just swarm towards the barrel?

    If they hate the object more than the player, they will attack the object.

    If they hate the object equally as much as they hate the player, they will attack whichever is closer.

    Sounds interesting to me too! Like an RE map where zombies break through walls and stuff! Or a map where you have to protect something from the enemy! Showing off those arms again?

    I Just Cant Wait Til 3.5 Comes Out! You Guys Are Doing A Really Great Job!

    Also, I've been wanting zombies to break down a wall to get to the players for a while now. This is wonderful!

    Thats cool.

    Some kind of: Defend the ammo crates at all cost or so (I know the idea is simplebut sounds ok)

    Or destroy their generator before they do it with ours

    Question: Will the enemy AI be able to hone in on breakable pushables?

    This is going to add a much bigger level of play to maps -- mappers won't have to pass off an invisible monsters as a the breakable object now

    Oh, and btw: +1 for the new barney gunshot sounds

    Very good now make them able to climb ladders and duck via nodes =p joking but if you do that i'll give you a cookie! (Even though it would probably be hard todo but meh...)

    Looks great! I think i can answer amckern's question. If the standard ally setting is ally to everything the monsters wouldn't attack them at all, breaks no maps.

    That is exactly what I was thinking! I immidiately imagined Barney running from a Garg only to stop as he passed a crate....

    Question: Are those arms which are used on the models in your video and in the picture going to be used in the game? Also is that the official new hud? [I like both those better than the default.]

    Hey a barney test chamber! Good idea, but I wonder if it's possible to trigger that.
    I mean that a barney shoots a window only at a specific moment and not when he see it right now. So the allyclass has to be able to trigger or something..

    Im just wondering if older maps will also be affected by this. What if there are older maps that have breakable objects that weren't meant to be broken by monsters?

    I assume that if the objects arent marked as 'hostile' to the monsters then the monsters wont try to break them. Old maps should work exactly the same way they did before.

    All func_breakables have a "default" classification. And it's set to default by default. Any object set to default will not be attacked by monsters. This means that by default creatures won't attack breakables.

    Also, this feature was already on the front page

    Nice, this is much better than sequencing a monster to attack a box then at the right time having it broken. Breaking down walls will be fun, especially for re maps.
