Post Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

Update: Added additional contest prizes from     !

Also, deadline extended to the 30th of September, 2009!

    Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest

Lately, map submissions to the Map Showcase have been few and far between, and admissions of maps into the Best of Maps Showcase have been even fewer. Thus we have decided to hold a BOMS (Best Of Maps Showcase) revival event by holding an Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

The goal of the contest is to stimulate our near-dormant mapping community and create a collection of new and interesting levels which, in turn, may be used to attract more players to Sven Co-op. However: entries must be, in some way, unique in comparison to the majority of previously released Sven Co-op maps in order to be considered as a winner of the contest. Guidelines on what we're going to be looking for are listed below. Mappers will have three months to create and submit their entries. See the bottom of this post for information on how to register yourself for entry in the contest.

Three grand prize winners will be chosen, and will be awarded the following prizes:

1st: $70 USD -OR- Up to $70 USD worth of Steam gifts, plus 3 Noesis training modules of your choice
2nd: $50 USD -OR- Up to $50 USD worth of Steam gifts, plus 2 Noesis training modules of your choice
3rd: $35 USD -OR- Up to $35 USD worth of Steam gifts, plus 1 Noesis training module of your choice

All three grand prize winners will also receive an official Sven Co-op T-shirt!

Additionally, the three winning maps will have the opportunity to be included in the next version of Sven Co-op, and all maps which have been entered in the contest (so long as they are serious attempts and fulfil the guidelines and rules) will be released in an official Sven Co-op map pack (including the three winners, until the next version of the mod is released).

    Guidelines for Entries:

What exactly are we looking for in a winning map? Again, we're looking for unique entries. Thus, standard walkthrough maps are highly discouraged. The following qualities will be what the judges will be specifically looking for in all entries. Applying them to your entry will enhance your likelihood of winning the contest. Note that these are not requirements, but recommendations:

    1. Custom Content - Custom Content is always a good way to give the player the feeling of playing something new or original. Utilization of default Half-Life won't hurt your score, but it will decrease your map's chances of winning the contest if someone else's map has tons of custom content and meets the rest of our criteria for a winning entry. However, if you use custom content which you do not own, be sure that you have permission to use it in your map and that you give the original creator credit for their work. Here is a list of possible custom content which we highly encourage you to use in your map:
    • Models (NPCs, furniture, weapons, ammo and items)
    • Textures
    • Detail textures
    • Sprites (Smoke, explosions, teleport- and beam-effects)
    • Environment maps (also referred to as skies)
    • Sounds (voice acting and non-HL ambient sounds, for instance)
    • Music
    2. Re-playability - The ability to replay the map multiple times without becoming bored. How you go about accomplishing this is up to you. Usage of trigger_random and trigger_random_time entities, random paths, or random monster spawns or music are just a few possible ideas.

    3. Usage of New Features and Sven Co-op-Native Entities - Showing off Sven Co-op's possibilities will also greatly increase your chance of winning the contest. Take a look at Sven Co-op's Entity Guide for a list of SC's entities from v3.0 and past, as well as the "New Entities, Parameters, Flags, and Mapping-Specific Features in Sven Co-op 4.0" Thread for a list of the latest features and entities in SC and descriptions of how to use them.

    4. Interesting Gameplay - Again, standard walkthrough maps are highly discouraged. Since the dawn of Sven Co-op there have been hundreds of them. We're looking for unique maps, and avoiding the normal walkthrough style will be the best way of making your map stand out. Here are a few recommendations for gameplay types, all of which are entirely possible to create:
    • Multi-directional (Players have multiple paths which they may choose from, or player's paths are chosen depending on how well they perform throughout the map.)
    • Invasion (Players spawn at one side of the map, and enemy monsters spawn at the other. Monsters and Players proceed to secure all command points on the map in order to win the game.)
    • Rush (Players have a given time limit in which they must succeed)
    • Defence (Defend an object or NPC to succeed)
    • Assault (Players attack an objective or objectives to succeed)
    5. Team work Remember: this is Sven Co-op. Try and include reasonable situations which require inventive player-to-player cooperation. Most maps lack combative strategy (e.g. players have to distract a Gargantua who acts as a guard for a mission objective while another player runs around it to accomplish the objective), and just about every map which tries to encourage player co-operation simply uses 2-button-systems. Be a little more creative than this and invent a more unique co-op situation.

    Rules for all Entries:
In order to be considered as a valid contest entry, the following rules must be observed:
    1. When including custom content which you did not create, seek permission where possible, and give credit where applicable.
    2. All entries must follow the 'Map Showcase Forum Rules' (click for more information.
    3. All entries must meet the 'Best of Map Showcase Guidelines' (click for more information).
    4. There is only one entry per person allowed.

    Other Things to note:
    • The deadline for all entries is September 9, 2009.
    • Entries are not restricted to a single map (meaning you may submit a series, not that you may submit multiple maps of no relation to one another).
    • You may enter the contest at any time; however, the deadline will not change.
    • You may use content which has already been made (specifically referring to maps). However, you may not enter anything which has already been released.
    • Check out the new compile tools here!

To Sign Up For The Contest:
Send an email to mappingcontest@svencoop.com with your name, forum username, Steam username, and any other methods of contact. Information on submission of entries will be given upon entry to the contest. Also check the Mapping Contest forum for discussion of the contest.

    Happy mapping!

Fine print: Judges' decisions are final, and no discussion into the judges' decisions will be entered into. Judges are barred from entering the contest. Any cash prizes to be given via PayPal payments. Noesis Interactive training modules to be provided as electronic downloads. By entering, you give us free permission to distribute your submitted map/s and associated files in any form and by any method. You also warrant that you own or have obtained necessary permissions for all files, that all files comply with all of these Official Rules, and that all files do not infringe any third-party rights or violate any laws or regulations.

Haha , i have like 3 maps that are 99% complete and i just coulnt finish them
edit : no i have 4 , they are called "military strike" , "gears of war" , "dark land" and "suicide_run2" and its always behind some few dirty triggers lol.My maps have high level of detail.

    http://s405.photobucket.com/albums/p...0War/Beta%202/

There are some screens the dark land is more of a walktrough.I have very little entity work because i have very little skills with anything related to numbers , counting , and stuff like that , practically most of the entity work. But i do use the trigger randoms to have different variation of monsters in different areas and i also use monsterclips to force monsaters to defend certain position

Question Re: Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

Sounds pretty cool and I may even hop in the contest because I have an idea for a map/series.

But I have a question, you say walkthrough maps are "highly discouraged" but what does that mean exactly? That they are not allowed at all or will just not be rated highly because of what they are? Because one can make a walkthrough map with multiple gametypes somehow embedded in.

However I would probably don't even come very far with my map because I would like to use content from ut2004 and serious sam 2 and they probably wont give permission.

You should wait with the contest until the new game modes are available.

Game modes like Assault, VIP Escort etc.
    Sorry for my bad english.

Re: Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

There's plenty of content already included with Sven Co-op, you just have to be creative about it.

The idea of the contest is to have players want to play these maps over again, that means new gameplay is highly encouraged. Sure you can send in a simple walk-through map, but its simply a guideline. If the walk though map has amazing story line, characters, environments, then all the better.

Sorry for the confusion, to be clear:

We do not want a A-Z shoot em up that has no interesting details/gameplay. Essentially most first person shooters are in fact "walkthroughs", however, most successful ones include things like story or architecture or puzzle solving along the way to keep people interested.

As for the modes, I really wouldn't count on any new actual code changes that add expanded game modes in the near future, however I could be wrong.

By gamemode's we more or less mean styles of gameplay you can already setup using the existing entity system. For instance a defense mode would be players defending an area "horde" style for a period of time. VIP Escort would be fairly simple using an allied monster, I think all allied monsters will follow you by default with use key for instance.

so, how does the shirt looks like? will we be able to choose the size?
also, if a winner lives in another country, who will pay for the shipping costs?

Re: Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

The reason I need the content is because I kinda have the map already planned and ut2k4 is the only game I know that has the textures I need.

And from Serious sam 2 I only wanted to use some music.

Ofcourse I could ask somebody who has experience as a texture artist to make the necissary ones but that would probably take too long, if I find one at all.

The shirts haven't been designed yet, we'll be doing that sometime in the three months before the contest finishes . You should be able to choose the size, though, yes.

Re: Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

In saying that walkthrough maps are 'highly discouraged', we simply mean that you probably shouldn't enter a map that plays exactly like 90% of all other SC maps and doesn't have any unique features to it. Because of the nature of the contest, you should assume that everyone else who enters the contest will probably submit something that has never before been seen, and thus such a map is probably not going to win the contest. It also says to avoid the standard walkthrough style, and I don't think what you suggested was very standard considering most of the maps that have been released for Sven Co-op over the years, Lt.JC.

And all shipping costs will be paid for, of course.

When it says only one submission allowed per person, how exactly is that handled? Does a series count as one submission, or does one submission mean exactly one .bsp file?

Entries are not restricted to a single map (meaning you may submit a series, not that you may submit multiple maps of no relation to one another).
So either a series or a single map may count as one submission.

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse anyone. It probably would have been a little more helpful if we put that right next to the rule about there being only one entry allowed per person.

Re: Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

You could easily set up something interesting with the current sc entities. I would suggest creating a map where the players can actually lose, which is something that's sorely lacking from about 99% of all Sven maps. I honestly think the lack of lose conditions is SC's major issue since it completely takes out all pressure from the game, so please, do this.

I was working on a map that was supposed to work something like this:

    - Players have to escort an npc to the end of the map.

    - The majority of the enemy npcs spawn infinitely to prevent the players from taking them out and then bringing the vip up afterwards when the area is clear. This way players will have to actively defend the vip by healing, blocking shots, focusing on npc's targetting the vip, etc.

    - Around the map there would be supply stations where you could load up on ammo, hev and medkit juice.

    - Around the map players would be able to trigger certain map-wide events, such as turrets activating to take care of the respawning npc's.

    - If the map geometry is simple, i.e no terrain, door overload, crazy ladders and elevators, escorting the npc shouldn't be a hassle.

Anyway, I'm currently working on other things at the moment, and it's highly unlikely that I'll return to working on this map, so feel free to use my idea if you wish.

We've noticed that the wording was a bit off in the announcement about how to enter the contest, and thus the final headline has been changed to 'To Sign Up For The Contest'. Anyone who intends on participating, please be so kind as to follow the instructions listed below it. This will give us an idea of how many people are actually taking part in the contest.

im gonna maek a map that has blocky architecture and long halls, narrow doorways but also large open areas and I'm gonna fill it with lots of monsters with over 9000 health that keep respawning over and over. And you can exploit my map and fall out of it into the huge skybox I'm gonna make around it, but its ok because I'm not gonna use null textures outside so you can see how awesome my map is from the outside.

Re: Official Sven Co-op Mapping Contest!

I personally wish me maps like Gruntwar.

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/834/...ial+Map+Pack+1

This had nice gameplay a bit of a Story and some nice features with npc reinforcements.

    1. Defend your base.

    2. Take some of your troops.

    3. Advance to the enemy base more reinforcements will arrive when you're there.

    4. Advance inside the enemy base and destroy a specific machine gather informations or just capture the enemy base.

Something like that would be fun to play. And that's excacly what it used to be in the Map Gruntwar which can be found in this mappack i posted.
    Sorry for my bad english.
