    Post The Turret Fortress Released!

    Nih has just released The Turret Fortress -- a highly unique map which he's been working on for more than a year.

           
    Players must fend off 12 waves of monsters by constructing sentry turrets and a few "special" friendly units. The players save up for these sentries and special units by killing the attacking monsters and surviving waves. If too many monsters make it to the end of the map, the players lose.

    Just to make life even harder for the players, random "Panic Events" will occur throughout the map. Such panic events could involve hostile soldiers infiltrating the base and installing a virus in the Turret AI, or the generators powering the sentries breaking down.

    For anyone who intends to play this, I would recommend at least 3 players. Anything less than that and the map cannot be won. If there's no one on the server and you're new to the map you could still use it as an opportunity to learn the map, as the map has a steep learning curve. Even on easy mode, there's a high chance that you will lose the first few times, as the map size can make it hard to navigate for newcomers. Once you get the hang of it though, it's pretty straightforward. Communication and teamwork is key.

    The balance may be slightly off in this version, but the 3 difficulty settings ensures that isn't a problem. Just start on easy mode and work your way up. I need as much feedback as possible to ensure that Normal and Hard mode provide a fair challenge. I must have set up at least 20 playtests with other players on top of the countless playtests I have done myself, but it's incredibly hard to hit the sweet spot of proper gameplay balance. It would be very helpful to me if people could send me their success rates for each difficulty once they have done (at least) 3 playthroughs. Just PM your results to me some time within the next 2 months, or as fast as possible.

    Looks extremly intresting, i'll have to try this out when i get back from work this evening.

    BTW wouldn't this topic be better of in the Map Showcase section ?

    For now I would like to keep comments in one thread. In the future I will set up a map showcase thread so people don't have to stumble upon the map in the news archive to find it.

    I like the ambient_generic. : ) I was lost wandering around there for a bit till I found the control room and spawned the first wave. I didn't "get" the map till I saw the enemies's route. A tower, defence map in Sven? Pretty nice!

    Edit: Currently no servers running the map atm. (If that's relevant.)

    Just type rtv and start a vote for turretfortress. The server is playing the map right now if you'd like to join.

    The map will soon be playable on the Multiplay servers as well.

    Looks like tower defense on the first screen. Is this really like tower defense? That would be interesting.

    This map is epic and really enforces co-op, a true Sven map! Every game needs more tower defence

    Hey

    A few friends and I just ran this map and we really wanted to see it cuz it looks pretty fun but meh.. in the beginning where you press the 'Easy/Normal/Hard' buttons nothing ever happened. We ended up with about 4 other players just waiting b4 we had to switch maps lol

    So how do u start this map?

    Press the Start button in the control room. You should watch the introduction again...

    When you click the Normal/Hard/Easy buttons a vote is supposed to start. Since you say nothing happens, I assume this vote didn't pop up. I can think of 3 reasons this would happen:

    - You are using some sort of custom server mod that trigger_vote doesn't work with, such as an outdated metamod.
    - You are playing a Sven Co-op version older than 4.5
    - You started a server vote around the same time you clicked the button. In that case, I believe the vote won't show up until the server "vote reset" timer has passed.

    Ya its probably the first one. I'll tell the server host about it, thx for telling that lol. No 'introduction' thing happened either. I bet hes not using Metamod-P.. what happened is we recompiled metamod with 3.5 cuz on Entmod whenever someone decides to make explosions on a player(lol) by spamming the delete key on them it crashes with MM-p and not with MM.. so we will add the new ents to old metamod (or just use MM-p) and it should work thx.

    Hm...Some errors.

    PF_precache_model_I: Model 'models/metalplategibs.mdl' failed to precache because the item count is over the 512 limit.
    Reduce the number of brush models and/or regular models in the map to correct this.

    I assume the map crashed when you got that error?

    I'm guessing you're using some kind of server mod that precaches extra models, which caused it to go over the limit.

    No.I haven't server mods.I tried to load map but it crashed while loading.

    Are you playing SvenCo-op 4.5 and on Steam?

    Try redownloading and reinstalling the map.

    P.S. How many times you script this?

    yeah it crashes for snarkcafe and my server too

    it seems 4.5's model limit is a LOT lower if you've already unprecached everything

    You mean how much time I spent on the map? I started working on the map in October 2009, but I spent about 5 months working on other maps, so about 10 months total.

    I'm not sure what you mean by this, but I noticed you were also unable to run Rickshaw. Both maps use global model replacement to bypass the model limit, so maybe those servers are incompatible with that feature or something.

    nah, greendale also began to crash on 4.5 even though EVERYTHING was already unprecached (even on listen server)

    i went and tried deleting mdl props but it continued to crash until i removed about 30-40 props

    so this means 30-40 models somehow got added? idk

    (yeah i know w_models got combined but that wouldn't matter in this case because they're already unprecached)

    Server Crashed with this error on this MAP
