    Desert circle

It is time to officially release this map now. A final playtest was done and it was good.

    What is this map about?
It is a simple fighting map. Players must conquer a castle that is laid somewhere in the desert. A direct attack on the castle is suicide. Instead players must fight their way through the desert and capture outposts before they can attack the castle itself. The ultimate goal is to drive the king out of his castle and to kill him.

    Gameplay
This is a simple fighting map without puzzles or jump&run sequences. However simple does not mean easy. There are lots of enemies and players are not well equipped. They can choose between two classes and each classes has is advantages and disadvantages. Players must coop using both classes to succeed.
    Features:
    - Instructions are given everytime you respawn.
    - Supplycrates can be found at important tactical positions for health and ammo. Use them!
    - Flags must be captured by looking at them and holding down USE.
    - In the castle the doors can be opened and ladders can be put up to make more entrances.
    - The difficulty of this map should adjust to the playercount but it may not be perfectly balanced.

    Graphics
This map is a big desert with no whatsoever visblocking and total freedom of movement. Some said that this layout is impossible in the HL-engine but I think this map proofs them wrong. w_polys are between 300 and 800 most of the time. e_poly range around 20000 and 30000 depending on the playercount. Note that this map uses detailtextures. Activate them to make the map look much better!

    This map is finished
Thank you for all your support and everyone who helped me with this. People have given me many ideas for additional features and improvements but I feel it is time to move on. Most importently I must focus on RL now. I will only update if major bugs occur. Maybe I will make a redux version in the future...

    Download this map from SCMapDB

I attached one screenshot. I think that is enough because it really catches the essence of this map and there isn´t much more to show.

    Re: Desert circle

Looks cool! I take you've drawn the shadows of the trees and bushes into the ground texture?

If you still consider suggestions: I would cut up the desert floor texture into some more segments so you can have a higher resolution. Even with detail textures it's quite blurry. Ofcourse the wpoly will go up a little, but if it's only 800 now, your map can surely handle that.

If I ever get the chance to play it, I'll give you a more detailed review

Weapon limitations are part of the map design and will not be changed. The map is fun as it is.

    Re: Desert circle

Just played it by myself with godmode. Very nice map. I like the slow tactical approach the players have to use to get the castle. It's also a pretty nice outdoor setting, which is a rare thing, and it manages to look good without wrecking everyone's framerate. I think it could be a BOMS candidate but I'd have to play with some more people to know. Are there any servers running this map?

When a player selects a weapon all the other players receive the same weapon.
    Also, there were some crashes.

I have put it up on my dedicated. You should be able to see it in the server list if you sort by maps.

IMO it can aim even a little higher.

However, several things i noticed, minor first:
    - the flag post should have a visible crank to pull up the flag. i was confused at where I press USE, and even more when the flag started to move back down.
    - disable weapon drop. you can choose a set of weapons, suicide, choose the other set, and pick up the first one - voila, all weapons available!
    - spawn room can be made more nice looking

    bigger things i noticed:
    - you can walk along the castle walls and go inside without doing any of the outside part.
Do it with passion, or not at all.
Do not say everything you know. Know everything you say.

    Re: Desert circle

How can you go inside the castle? The doors should be closed and the walls can only be destroyed with the mortar. Plz explain.

Ps: I guess I will make another update soon. This map does need a little more polishing here and there.

    Re: Desert circle

one of the best large outdoor maps i've seen. the combat as you as approach each base is well thought out, tasteful, and tactical, without enemy spam coming from every direction. good use of trenches and resupplies, barriers, etc. to allow for interesting combat scenarios and places for cover. i like the mountainous terrain with hills and valleys... good for HL engine. it makes for good vertical gameplay as you approach the bases. also, your line of sight is more controlled to defined areas rather than having it be a huge flat map. similarly, when entering the castle there are many platforms at different levels to offer vertical combat. i was very pleased to be able to use the mortar and control it in all directions. overall desert circle is a refreshing change from standard linear maps, and the AI seems to do quite well. the regular grunts, snipers, rpg grunts each are used appropriately. the castle on the hill provides an immediate idea of what your end goal is, and the bases along the way offer a lot of freedom with how to launch your attack.

First I finished this alone and later recommended to my cousin, who I also played it with. I loved it, what else can I say? Brilliant idea with some pretty good gameplay and mapping that made the area look much larger and open. One of my new personal favorites.

I miss you so much, dear!
