We won't need those mods to get that stuff. With the source code it can be implemented into Svencoop and it would probably work even better than in mods like Arrangement or Paranoia.

    Wow, nice news
Was wondering about existing maps working in current form or "tweaked" to work with new engine
Somebody had insight to create the steam page for sven those many years ago

I also wonder if valve would except some of the engine optimizations and fixes(for limits) back into the mainstream half-life game?

They did ask us to send back relevant fixes, so hopefully that might work out.

Great news. With this happening, i might as well ask: Is there a chance for getting D3D back?

Rather than add D3D back to the engine, we're planning to eventually improve OpenGL performance for all system configurations.

    Hehe yeah would be cool

But if stuff like that would get implemented I guess it would look more like this in the end:

Its up to the developers but personally I would prefer to see more gameplay functions rather than shiny graphics.

I'm not a fan of the overblown detail maps on all of the textures.

I think all those screenshots look terrible. What is this, a plastic world with jelly glass doors?

You guys should rather spend the time on optimizing the engine instead of pushing the limits further. SC isn't the most stable game right now. With some magiczz, I bet you guys can do wonders.

Indeed. I still prefer optimization and gameplay over graphics.

    Re: The Big Announcement

Remember people this is all just theory, it's up to the team to decide if svencoop supports it or not

I agree with some of you saying that it looks kinda like plastic or something. Actually those screenshots remind me a lot of Doom 3 because if anyone played that game you probably know what I mean. Doom 3 was the definition of "Excessive Bumpmap Overuse" which gave the whole game a very unnatural and plastic like look. But I guess because of the futuristic scifi setting it didn't matter that much.

It is up to the person who creates the bumpmaps to make it look "right". Take a look at Half-Life 2 that shows how it is done to make it look more natural. I guess that in HLFX they were quickly created with some kind of tool without spending too much time of effort on it just to make sure that they are in the game.

Bumpmaps would just be a nice to have feature. They are basically like the detail textures Halflife supports, nice looking if done right but still not everyone uses them.

Also I want to say that the support of bumpmaps does not automatically increase the overall graphic quality of the game because they would need to be created first and looking at the amount of textures Halflife and all the custom maps have this would be a tremendous amount of work for anyone who does it. So it would either be a fan project or just used for future maps.

Maybe that is why it is not a good idea afterall? Having some maps that make use of this feature and others don't may not look so good I don't know.

    Let's go offtopic:

I'm very curious about the technical details behind this, if true. Not just the buzzwords people are throwing around...

Not really, crashes are nowhere near as common as they used to be.

I count server dropping and netcode issues as instability.

Same, Doom 3 relied extremely heavily on bumpmaps, without them the models in doom 3 probably wouldn't look all that good. There's only so much you can do with low poly environments/models and bumpmaps.

I'd like to see better lighting implemented in the game, have a better flashlight.

And yep, SC is quite a bit more stable than it used to be, even when playing it in wine on linux.
