Command: Copy file - Access is denied

This error didn't happen with Zoner's or the Super compile tools. After switching with the new tools, without changing anything in Hammer's configuration, the copy file command fails for some reason. It's not a real problem, since the compilation happens successfuly and I have to copy the file on my own.

In Hammer's maps folder, the names of the compiled maps are not finished, for example: "cliffTest" is "CLIFFT~1". I am guessing that the compilers leave the name like this, and then try to find the file by it's real name, so the command fails. I am not sure.

I may be missing something simple, but I don't know were to search and I haven't found a thread or post in the forums issuing this problem. So, how do I fix this?

Re: Command: Copy file - Access is denied

Usually those OS access messages are, well, the OS. Could be a file open, could be disk space, could be a bad destination... Try running it with right-click run as administrator?

Edit: This sounds more like the OS after re-reading. File names like "CLIFFT~1" are created on a FAT32 file system because it needs something to fit in the original 8.1 format that FAT used. So to me it sounds like you are on an old OS, are you running XP? You could have a lot of problems more than just your compile issue.

Edit2: Yeah, the 8.3 file convention is circumvented by the OS having a relationship file in order to represent the "abcdef~1.xyz" filename as something more friendly like "ABC's friendly filename.txt". But ultimately, on a FAT32 drive, the name is still stored in 8.3 format and you only see the nice long file name because of that reference file.

Regardless, the "~1" naming convention you are seeing and the error you are seeing makes me think it is more something to do with your computer than the program.

You can switch off the classic 8.3 filename creation but it differs between Windows versions. Which are you running?

Win 7 here. I have tried the tools on a different PC with Win 7 and on an old laptop with XP- same thing.
Anyway, here is the whole log from Hammer.
I have renamed the map to "kill_hole".

Well, if it's just having issues copying the file, does "c:\stuff\valve hammer editor\maps\kill_hole.bsp" and is it ok? If so, just copy it yourself. Also, I assume that you actually have a location called "E:\Half-Life\valve\maps\"

Both locations exist. And I think you missed a word in "..., does *address* and it's OK?".
Also to note- both Win 7 systems I mentioned are with the 64 bit versions.
Because this happens on 3 different systems, I can only assume that either the programs have a little bug, or I am not setting up something right.

Re: Command: Copy file - Access is denied

    Suggestions:

Rename "valve hammer editor" to "valve_hammer_editor" .

"Hammer Compiles" and Using drive c: and e:
I seem to remember that causes problems [copy the "E:\Half-Life\valve\maps\" to c: and see if that possibly fixes it.]

Other Solutions: There are a number of batch compilers that work outside of hammer e.g.
    Nems batch with VL fix
    "Nems batch compiler" (official version)

Keep us in the loop as to any fixes you find.

Sorry, it was early for me, what I actually meant to say is that the bsp file exists? [Well, if it's just having issues copying the file, does the bsp file "c:\stuff\valve hammer editor\maps\kill_hole.bsp" exist and is it ok?]

I see your point that if it fails on multiple systems, then it should be a problem with the compiler, however when doing 'tech support', gotta start with the most basic possible problem then work up from there. It's not uncommon for someone to make a simple little mistake and not notice it themselves. It's not meant to be insulting, just thorough.

I think wolf-3d may be on to something with the folder names and drive paths. When in doubt, try something simple like an 8.3 naming scheme on the same drive. If that works, then go from there. Also, E: isn't a network drive is it?

Edit: Also just to check with you, there isn't already a file "E:\Half-Life\valve\maps\kill_hole.bsp" is there? If there is, can you move or delete the file? If that file does already exist, it isn't open by something else?

I mean, if you were to open a command prompt and type the following, do you also get an error message?
    Copy "c:\stuff\valve hammer editor\maps\kill_hole.bsp" "E:\Half-Life\valve\maps\kill_hole.bsp"

Re: Command: Copy file - Access is denied

The E:\ drive is an external HDD (I am on a laptop with an SSD card). Still, on the other two systems, the tools and the game are located on the same drive, same error.

I tried the Copy command a few times and I compared it with Hammer's log:

Name:	error.jpg
Views:	62
Size:	392.3 KB
ID:	15928

Also, no files called "kill_hole.bsp" and "kill_hole.pts" are created, I forgot to mention that. Like I said, the first file has a different name, but the second one doesn't get created.

I tried compiling a map with a shorter name- same error.

How do you do the name scheme thing?

Hint: Remove the "spaces" before and after hammer in the path "c:\stuff\valve hammer editor\maps\kill_hole.bsp"

    Nope... Sill, "Access is denied.".

Yet again, it's not "Could not find the file specified.", meaning it does find the file, but something blocks the copying command.

The address shouldn't be a problem anyway, this whole thing started after switching to the VHLT, WITHOUT making any changes in the configurations. Yet again I will try with the old ZHLT just to make sure. After I take care of their problem with finding the textures...

Re: Command: Copy file - Access is denied

okay, see your point - The reason I would still still use a "combo solution approach" are:

    "Short vs. Long Names

A long file name is considered to be any file name that exceeds the short MS-DOS (also called 8.3) style naming convention. Typically, Windows stores long file names on disk as special directory entries, which can be disabled systemwide for performance reasons depending on the particular file system. When you create a long file name, Windows may also create a short 8.3 form of the name, called the 8.3 alias, and store it on disk also. This 8.3 aliasing can be disabled for a specified volume."

As your compile.log is referring to:
    ----- BEGIN hlbsp -----
    Command line: C:\Stuff\VALVEH~1\tools\hlbsp.exe c:\stuff\VALVEH~1\maps\KILL_H~1

    and
    Copy file "c:\stuff\valve hammer editor\maps\kill_hole.bsp" "E:\Half-Life\valve\maps\kill_hole.bsp"
    * Windows gave the error message:
    "Access is denied."

We can see that "Hammer" and the "VL compilers" are Accessing & Locking the same file(s) in slightly different ways.

Thus any of the following could potentially fix your problem: using an old (single thread/core) slow PC, old OS or old compilers).

The required steps are not necessarily mutually exclusive because Hammer has not been updated (Yet) whereas your PC, OS and the compilers are more modern.
    - Remove spaces, shorten directory and file names to be 8.3 compatible.
    - Extra HDD's/partitions where uncommon in 1997, use the same hdd letter.
    - Use a External and updated batch compiler (it will speed up compiles anyway.)

Guess it will the third option for me. I just have to learn how to do that, when I find a good tutorial for that- so far two tutorials and both don't work, because they are not full. Damn... I am becoming a software developer and I don't know how to make simple batches.

Not a problem, try this link, it should provide enough info. for you to build your own simple dos.bat/batch files.

If you really think it is an issue with short filenames vs long filenames, you can turn that behaviour off in Hammer. In the advanced compile dialog there is an option to "Use long filenames". You can select and de-select it for each step individually, so make sure you enable it for all compiler operations. I personally have it activated for everything.

Re: Command: Copy file - Access is denied

No, it is not the names that is making a problem. That's why it gives "Access is denied." for the .bsp file. For some reason the system cannot copy the file. And I have the "Use long filenames" checked- for some reason it does not work for me- but about that some other time.

I am still trying (as in currently not trying) to make a batch file that enables the compilation. I was able to make one that copies the .bsp and enables the game, so at least that makes my life a bit easier.

    Hello dear guys,

i recommend your access right before you need to run as Admin with hammer.exe than it will write enable to compiling procress.

I have found "Access is denied."

If you set up premission like hammer.exe need to access with RUN-AS-ADMIN like you click right "Run as Admin" than hammer starts with administratived mode and it saves and writes to bsp file.

Thanks and i hope that my help is successful for you!

Thanks for the input SourceSkyBoxer. I guess I shouldn't have, but I assumed he we running it with admin privileges... :/

I'd be more sure the access on your external hard disk is set correctly (I'm guessing its' NTFS)? Just having the administrators group on full access to a location isn't enough since Windows Vista, otherwise you HAVE to run applications in administrator mode. If you want to avoid that you have to assign file permissions for your individual user account.

Also I would advise you use Nem's batch compiler instead of compiling maps through Hammer. You get a much wider range of options at your fingertips, particularly if you don't know what the options are.

I'm sick about admin mode, just disable UAC so you don't have to Run as admin every app you have.
