    Glitch-Life program

    I spent some time finishing up and improving the Glitch-Life program. There's a lot of new stuff in it but it's also less stable than it was before (mostly because of model replacement bugs in SC). This will probably be the last version unless there are some bugs I overlooked.

    Some new stuff (corrupting textures, lightmaps, and geometry):



    All options and settings are documented. Corruptions can be configured to be constant - so if you want to play through Half-Life upside-down and in greyscale it's easy to do. I encourage you to look through the built-in help pages and gsrand_config.txt to see how you can customize your experience!

    + Model randomization finished (unstable)
    + Sprite randomization
    + Skybox randomization
    + New entity randomizations
    + BSP corruptions (geometry + lighting + textures)
    + Sound effect randomization (reverb, pitch, etc.)
    + BSP model randomization (off by default)
    + Skill file generation
    + MOTD file generation
    + RES file generation
    + Non-default content is usable
    + Textures embedded in maps are usable (yay porn)
    + Cheats via entities (noclip, godmode, impulse 101)
    + Grapple weapon can attach to most walls
    + Configuration file added for advanced settings and map selection
    + Custom and timestamp map prefixes supported
    + Randomizations can be zipped if 7za.exe is present (download)
    + HLSP "Kill all monsters" restriction is bypassed
    + The "common wad" texture mode can replace all map textures now
    
    Fixes:
    - Map prefixes work properly now
    - Visual C++ Runtime no longer required
    - Fixed memory usage spikes and leaks
    - Fixed certain sounds not being randomized
    - Fixed unicode characters in program path preventing gsrand.exe from finding files
    
    Other changes:
    - Removed "Write WAD for each map" texture mode

    If you have an anti-virus program and it deletes the .exe when you try to extract it, download the version in this post instead.

    Could you add in a More Monsters Option ? Like randomly placed squadmakers that spawn monsters

    really cool program! im gonna have to force a few friends to play this with me.

    just a friendly warning to anyone trying this tough, there is a high chance that the impulse 101 will be serious ear rape. Even more so than normally

    It might be tricky to find random spawn locations but I'll add this to my to-do list.

    haha yes, this is important! I usually press my cl_stopsound key immediately after impulse 101. Btw if you press USE + RELOAD at the same time it will give you all weapons/ammo without having to enable cheats (see gsrand_config.txt for more).

    oh god this is rad, to bad it keeps crashing on me all the time after listing the amount of content

    Yea i actually did do the impulse 101 with the use + reload. Maybe make it do the cl_stopsound automatically?

    Does it crash when you begin randomizing or while it's finding content? You could try putting gsrand in its own folder in case some of your content is causing it (see "Content Selection" in the readme).

    I don't think that's possible. I can replace the weapon/ammo pickup noise with nothing though. *to-do list grows*

    Or you could exclude the pickup sounds entirely from the randomization.

    ^ If turning off texture replacement or setting tex_embed_mode=0 fixes it too then there might be a bug with finding embedded textures. Finding things like models and sounds should be pretty safe.

    oh k i guess its the textures, but thing is that i get that part to work while using only default models or sounds but now vice versa. i guess just overloading

    I think I found the problem, the program is trying to load every embedded texture into memory which can be hundreds of MB. I'll get that fixed soon.

    actually only times its crashing when i enable any texture option with non-default or everything content mode, something keeps shitting on that part. also embed disabled

    man if it was working and with all with the other stuff combined itd been brutal

    New Features:
    + Added ear_rape_safety setting (for impulse 101)
    
    Fixes:
    - Fixed the "common wad" texture mode
    - Fixed memory usage spikes and leaks
    - Possibly fixed RNG's crash with texture modes
    - Timestamp map prefixes are lowercase now (fixes server issue reported by Keen)
    - Fixed grapple not being provided with corruption modes
    - Fixed gsrand_ maps being included in map list
    - Fixed spore ammo and impact sounds not being randomized
    
    Other changes:
    - Real-time status updates when finding content
    - Removed "Write WAD for each map" texture mode
    I just wanted to fix some bugs that came up. Random monster spawns will take some time to do properly.

    I have GSrand in a folder with all the WADs and maps inside it, and the program can't seem to find any sounds at all from the WADs!

    Sounds are stored in the "sound" folder, not in WADs. Did you mean it can't find any textures?

    No he means, the copy to folder option doesnt work for models/sprites/souns and so on.

    If you have special characters in the path to gsrand (like Ü or ñ) then the program won't be able to find files (fixing this atm).

    The program should either copy everything or not work at all... I'm not sure why it's only partially copying content. Are you only using default models/sounds/etc.? In that case only the maps would be copied.

    Just wanted to say: thank you for this amazing program. I am addicted and did nothing but play random maps for the last 3 days. There is an LSD-Emulator game out there but glitch-life surpasses it many times! Super random models may be dangerous because of crashes but they are totally worth it. The sound is just amazing! Random objects are shouting at me for no reason and there is good music everywhere.

    I hope you will do a few more updates!
    Questions:
    Could you add more random fog? Different densities and colors? I think it would fit well.
    Could you do more mathematical transformations in brush corruption to twist and bend maps? For example x = x + (y*0.1)

    That's awesome, I'm glad you like it! I played through HL with keen and co. yesterday and it was pretty trippy playing through maps where water is on the ceiling. After all the chaos was over we were awarded with a sunset on floating islands.

    Randomizing fog is like 5 mins of effort and I meant to put that in but forgot (expect it in v4).

    As for twisting/bending I'm afraid that can't be done so easily. Honestly, just getting map flipping to work was way more complicated than it should have been (collision detection planes don't work as expected). Bending/twisting would probably cause a lot of "Bad surface extents" errors, which might be hard to work around. Maybe in the future I'll have more energy for this.

    In the future, I also want to the program generate random content. For example, taking existing models and messing with the vertices/bones/animations/textures. I can imagine that being pretty horrifying.
