After too many delays, I have finally put this together. In the future I will have a video version, but that comes later.

Yeah at some point in the future I may return to do a Gimp version. One thing that does bother me about gimp is that the way it dithers or chooses colors during 8-bit palette building is atrocious. Like so bad that I actually found it was better to save it out as 24bitbmp and then use IRFANVIEW (awesome free image program I use for tons of stuff) to build the 8bitbmps.

A friend who had a boatload of textures for batch processing asked me to find a way of converting so I made a quick and dirty tutorial on it, also his source images were already ready made for indexed colors/hard masked transparency so I included a fast method for background palette index swaps:

Animated textures is very slow. I recommend with Spirit of Half-Life via env_sky like utskytest.bsp if you know to create sequere for scientist movements.

I know about animated textures since i tested it but bsp content is too big if my bsp was embed with animated textures.

It's possible to get 20fps with sprites (and then you can fix them to an axis to make them look like a texture), but the file size can inflate to several MB if you're not careful.

Doesn't that method cause a bunch of network/entity overhead? Also is there a way we can make a clientside per-map angelscript to fix sprite framerates?

Also, yeah frames and filesizes are a big problem, but Ive seen some low filesize workarounds and timings for example the TV playing street fighter movie on ts_bikini.bsp from the specialists mod.

Re: Map Texture Tutorial: Static, Animated, Transparent,Toggled, and Water

Hello @w00tguy123 and @The303, I am thinking better other way like more frames you know dynamic map like func_train and path_corner via teleport if you see like this old example TheWall sorry it made by Germany. like door opens with faked shadow or room with movable monitor. I think it is better than animated textures. example fram_01 , ..... frame_30 brushes were marked to func_train and both path_corner with teleport from spawn-flags and multi_manager. And map doesn't have problem if frames see like fake movie. example your banny crashes again button with more frames than you can see in-game like it is very faster than animated textures... if they use -nowadtextures

    EDIT:
I give suggestion alternative to animated textures - if you use func_train and path_corner more than animated textures...

Hi @the303, good idea method 6: very biggest texture and you can make generated 6 textures for skybox but it is very hard
    Check website!

Do you know about animated skybox? Since I have invented and posted Sven Coop ( very very old post Just Skychanger )

If you don't know how do I get skybox changer. I will show tutorial. okay...

I definitely need to try this if I ever get into advanced mapping, great research.
Have a nice day, no matter what you went through it'll all be okay by tomorrow.

Yeah this was THE most difficult tutorial to research, even moreso than the mdl stuff ive done. Almost nothing exists online for goldsrc and even stuff for source can be sometimes lacking. Did a huge amount of testing methods and even had to redo some parts, such as rendering cubic from regular blender render (apparently the lighting does NOT align with all the faces properly which is why I went with Cycles + Equalrectangular to skypaint for cubic conversion) also thanks to lossy for helping me test skypaint terragen + win10 compatibility.

I can post some of the links I saved while researching this:

http://wiki.polycount.com/wiki/Cube_map (tons of links at end of page)

Part 9 for the tutorial will be Detail textures which will be a lot easier than this one and shouldnt take too long.

Now this is done I can move on to other things like the modelling and the long-shelved SPRITE tutorials.

Lightbulb Re: Map Texture Tutorial: Static, Animated, Transparent,Toggled, and Water

    UPDATE!

I have finally put together a proper example map that I should have done a long time ago, and I have made a few various tweaks for non-photoshop users such as clarifying a bit better on what to do and linking/skipping to IRFANVIEW dithering method and the quick wally conversion option. Also adding the web archive of the old wally tutorial page which Is quite good. This is all available on the front page http://www.the303.org/tutorials/gold_texture.htm

I have also streamlined the "masked" part2 for faster index swapping within photoshop.

    Example map pics:

Lastly, hopefully I will have the looooong-delayed 6-part sprite tutorial done by the end of this week.
